In this case, he didn't say it.

We had this argument almost a year ago in theweaselking's journal, when he first reported that Bush had said that Mandela was dead (not the date on the ThinkProgress post, it's almost a year old.)

Bush was using "Mandela" as a figure of speech. When he said "well, Mandela’s dead because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas" he didn't mean that S. Hussein had sent commandos to South Africa and assassinated the Mandela family. He meant that Hussein's brutal rule had wiped out or intimidated the potential rebels in Iraq.

Our President isn't the brightest or most deep thinking elected official we've ever elected. But there are so many reasons to disagree with or mock him that I have no idea at all why people go out of their way to create non existent ones.

Yeah, i'd say that much is obvious just from the quoted section in the thinkprogress entry.

Also, people don't "keep voting" for Bush. Just twice. And that was bad enough.

Anyway, the time is ripe for Mandela to blow up some DC monuments, now that our government has finally stopped staring at him.

Actually, way back when I was one of the people saying "Look, he said a stupid thing, but what he MEANT is obvious. He didn't literally mean Nelson Mandela, he meant the Iraqi equivalent."
