I've been ignoring my LJ for four days.

I just hit a URL that ends in "?skip=850" just to catch up on my Friends list.

I suspect there will be a pruning. Prune! Prune! Prooooooooone!

Prunes, they keep you regular.

I tried once but couldn't bring myself to cut anything.

I'm gonna end up like my grandmother, in a big house full of old papers and knick-knacks.

Yeah, I keep getting to the point I need to cut stuff, and I end up rearranging my filters again.

John, you were away for 4 days and didn't read a filtered f-list first? Fule. I virtually never look at the whole thing, always go by filters, much easier to manage then.

I was busy, so no list at all.

And I don't normally filter, because anyone I want to read my Friendslocked stuff is *also someone I want to read*, and I find that filters just make me miss stuff.

And it's ALL IMPORTANT. All of it!

Heh, given it was partially due to you and your userinfo that I first started using filters, this is a nice little paradoxical conversation.

Yes, everything is important, but you don't always have time to read everything at once, so I have 'people I know', followed by 'people that post about stuff', then 'spamming weasels' and a bunch of other crap, the other filters rarely get read these days, really need to trim off the crap so I start using them again.

I have missed stuff because I was busy (like, for example, your engagement post, which happened during a time I was swamped at work), but it does mean I read the real life friends stuff always, and have something that'll amuse me if I seek amusement, etc.

And I've been planning to post this rationale for ages, Jennie refuses to try them, but does have people friended not on her default view, it's a strange approach but it works for her.

I also keep meaning to install and try that web feedreader package I got linked to, looks like a better version of the friends page, I'll dig it out again soon hopefully.

That's not in my info for *my* benefit.

But anyway. To me, the main benefit of a filter would be to let me Friend someone so they could see my locked posts, and yet not watch their posts in return.

Which is weird!

(What I'd like, actually, is the ability to filter on post status. All locked posts on one page! All unlocked posts on another! THAT would be useful.)

...so I have 'people I know', followed by 'people that post about stuff', then 'spamming weasels' and a bunch of other crap...

That's basically how I break down my three filters. #1 I make sure to always go all the way through, #2 is bloggy stuff that I'm interested in but isn't vital like Pharyngula, and #3 is neat stuff that I'd like to peruse but can be safely skipped if I don't have the time.

I've also solved the friends locking thing by never locking anything. Except for one hiccup while in Iraq, it's worked just fine.

I take a bit of pride that part of this is my fault.

Actual Pruning, or just moving folks off the Default View? I enjoy reading Real Content from you, and that tends to be f-locked.

Well, the problem is that *everything* is Default View, right now. And I like it that way, because I get everything. But everything also gets me.

So far I've only cut the [livejournal.com profile] tordotcom feed, because HOLY FUCK THE MOST BORING BLOGGERS IN EXISTENCE POSTING FIVE TIMES A DAY is not worth it to get the cool articles. They need feeds for individual authors, there, stat. And feeds by content, too.

I dumped a half-dozen accounts, but they were all people who:
A) I didn't know, beyond their LJ account
B) had posted repeatedly in that timeframe
C) hadn't posted anything really interesting recently.

Extremely unlikely. You don't post a lot, you *do* post interesting things, and I know you personally.

The half-dozen cuts today were all people and feeds that repeatedly posted things I didn't care about in the ~900 posts while I was gone.

When I fall behind by a few days, I usually just skip those entries and check specific people I'm interested in catching up on.
