My dad has one or two of those somewhere, he always called them 'do-nothing machines'

And wherever did you find an animation of an antique pepper-grinder?

... Oh is that what it actually is?

I just noticed that the end of the stick was moving in what seems to be an exact circle (given that it's at an angle so it really looks like an ellipse in the animation).

It's actually an ellipse. Note the short and long radii.

That's what I've been told, though I can't verify that right now. I can see how it would work as one, but only if contained inside something that would catch the spices and force the larger bits back into the tracks for grinding...

I'm curious to see a real one in action, now. It's certainly different from how most peppergrinders in the last 30 years have worked.

There is something it does you know. This principle is behind the "intermittent gear" in a projector. That's the one that starts, and stops the film in front of the aperture, so the light from the shutter can shine through. Wiki has a good graphic of it...

And how do I know? I get to run one of these every night.

Very cool, I think I've seen something about that in the past, but more education is always a good thing.

Toys are awesome! Now I've got to find out if he made them himself or got them somewhere...

I just can't shake the feeling that there'd be excessive wear at two points in the cycle.

No, it's actually an ellipse. The rod doesn't change length, and at the ends, it reaches to the middle of the block. One the sides, it reaches all the way to the far side of the block.
