There is something it does you know. This principle is behind the "intermittent gear" in a projector. That's the one that starts, and stops the film in front of the aperture, so the light from the shutter can shine through. Wiki has a good graphic of it...

I just noticed that the end of the stick was moving in what seems to be an exact circle (given that it's at an angle so it really looks like an ellipse in the animation).
That's what I've been told, though I can't verify that right now. I can see how it would work as one, but only if contained inside something that would catch the spices and force the larger bits back into the tracks for grinding...
No, it's actually an ellipse. The rod doesn't change length, and at the ends, it reaches to the middle of the block. One the sides, it reaches all the way to the far side of the block.
