It's not a word count. There's a formula around somewhere, but it basically increments the previous one with a random number that has an upper and lower bound.
The number is post # * 256 + a random increment, so John is incorrect as he's actually made 11720 posts, the display on the profile is visible undeleted posts, not all posts, any duplicates or whatever get a different url.
Other software uses increments of 1, like Wordpress, but that's very obvious and makes deletions very visible, LJs obfuscation means that most people don't even bother looking, although at least one person I know once hacked her friends page to display the post number.
Well, I'm at 320k (http://glitteringlynx.livejournal.com/320028.html). Give me time, I'll get there. :)

The multiplier is 256, but it'll count any deleted posts as well, so you can only work it backwards-the profile count doesn't display deleted posts. Divide the number in the url by 256 and you get the number + a random bit.

I am not of the number
Date: 2008-08-02 11:42 am (UTC)My last post is garnished with a 91225. My excuse: I type really slowly and aspire to no more than one post per day.
Re: I am not of the number
Date: 2008-08-02 12:35 pm (UTC)I don't know *why*, either.

Your number: 24294
It goes up with your number of posts. Just not linearly.

Your number of entries is 5.16 times mine, and your .html number is 4.84 times. So it's not too far, but it's not linear. Strange.
