Tampa Bay? Florida, duh.

Reminds me of this book, which I read a year or so ago. I hope Dani's story turns out better.

But you're right that that takes all the fun out of it.

Her new parents sound like angels. And her new brother... he's amazing. They just sound like such good people.

It sounds like her bio-mom has some serious mental problems.

William was used to living like an only child, but since Dani has moved in, she gets most of their parents' attention. "She needs them more than me," he says simply.

These people are amazing, both to have taken this girl in, and to have raised their own son this well.

God, that's terrible, on so many, many levels.

And that the mother feels victimized. Jesus Christ in a bucket.

The abusers always do feel victimized. They're horribly oppressed and put upon and nobody understands them or how difficult it is to raise a child.

At least, that was the argument my parents made when my grandparents (successfully) sued for custody of me. I work for a lawyer now (for one of my jobs), and it's the same argument that is made every day when someone comes to us looking for help getting their children back after they've been "stolen" by CPS.

The mother has an IQ of 77, which admittedly isn't quite to moron level but it's pretty low, and she's got psych issues to boot. I don't think she really does understand what's going on.

-- Steve's really concerned about Child Protection Services, though, which must've caught a hint of what was going on and yet did nothing for almost four years.

True, but at their formative years she still had a minder husband who probably acted as enough of a prompt or reminder. (And one of them's functionally impaired too, right?)

-- Steve's not defending the biological mother, who definitely should NOT have any sort of custody or contact with the child... he's just not convinced it's malice instead of horrific incompetance behind the neglect.

PS: It's not like that vegan couple who refused to feed their infant animal products, which apparently also included mother's milk, and thus starved him to death on soy "milk" and apple juice. That was an eyes-open decision, with the parents clearly seeing the child fail to thrive; I definitely approve of their conviction because their decision was made without impaired cognition and psychological disorder.

And I thought the two starved kids here in town were bad... It's old news by now, but still,- at least they got some justice, and will recover to a certain extent...

The three adults were given maximum sentences, prison terms and with any luck, will never see those children again.

Wow, that was really disturbing. I saw shades of my mother in that woman, but she didn't approach that level of craziness until I was about 16 at which point I was fully willing to go to court to get away from her. Same attitude of denial and victimization though. To this day I don't feel comfortable going into the places where she lives. I find a place to meet her or I let her come visit my home. I don't believe she's ever acknowledged the fact that I testified against her. She always blames my Dad.

If she waived her parental rights, they wouldn't send her to jail.

She took the plea. She was given two years of house arrest, plus probation. And 100 hours of community service.

I wish the article had explained why the state couldn't just revoke her parental rights in a case like this and, instead, had to do a plea bargain.

I can't even form a coherent sentence right now about how much I despise her bio-mother.
