Christian Exodus

Not new, but I haven't linked them here yet.

They want to move enough Christians to South Carolina that they can vote to secede and form their own country, which they will rule with God's laws.

Initial goals:

1. 12,000 members by December 31, 2006.
2. Move thousands into South Carolina by October 31, 2008.
3. Work several local political campaigns in 2008 (election goals set at that time).
4. Complete Phase One by end of 2008.

Sounds like this Paul Park short story from about 10 years ago, called "The Last Homosexual". It's about this closet case who lives in some sort of fundamentalist enclave (located in Louisiana, if memory serves) where it's taught that homosexuality is spread by viruses. The title refers to this sort of zoo where they're keeping one, who touches the protagonist, thereby convincing him that he's been infected.

It's a really good story and my description's not doing it justice. It doesn't appear to be online anywhere, but it's in a collection called If Lions Could Speak.

Just do it...

Why do I get this mental image of thousands of people looking up with extremely madly-cheerful expressions while waving good-byes?

Given that that idea didn't work for the secessionists in 1860, when the federal government was much less involved in an individual citizen's life than it is now, do they actually think that they're going to be able to make it work this time? If so, they are imbecilic, not to mention lunatic.

With the exception that i would feel sorry for those in SC with a brain, i would highly encourage them to do it...

I say let's all donate thousands of dollars to them and get them out of our voter base.
