"Don't think of Ike as a Cat 2 or 3 hurricane, think of it as a tsunami 200 miles long with hurricane winds above."

Based on total kinetic energy, Ike is now the second-most powerful Atlantic event since measurements began.

Galveston, TX's weather service says:
"All neighborhoods... and possibly entire coastal communities... will be inundated during high tide. Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single family one or two story homes will face certain death"

I guess most people would retreat in the face of certain death... but this is Texas. There will surely be a good number left guarding their homes with their guns ready.

At least my friends near Houston won't be pulled out to sea, but I guess there is a chance I won't hear from them for a couple weeks if the power lines are shredded.

Houston's only 50 miles from Galveston. It's not exactly expected to be in good shape.

But yes. Probably not washed out to sea.

You know that phrase "hundred year storm"?

The last was in 1900.

But they may start coming quicker and more furiously. The cycles do seem to be getting stronger.

The problem is, a lot of people heard "cat 2" and ignored the rest of it, thinking "Oh, not as bad as Rita then" and going on with life as usual, save maybe boarding up the windows.

It's looking very not good for Galveston right now.

On Texas?

I think even the fundies might have some trouble with that.

A guest writer on the Huffington Post writes that 140,000 people decided to not leave Houston. And now they're all freaking out and expecting FEMA to come quickly to their aid. Surprise Surprise... FEMA, the National Guard, The Coast Guard... all right there, immediately. They wouldn't even move to help people in New Orleans, but some redneck Texans are apparently a valuable resource. Like you said... it is Texas.
