Canada's Interim Placeholder Minister Of Agriculture, on the topic of a listeriosis outbreak due to tainted meat that has killed 17 people: "This is like a death by a thousand cuts. Or should I say cold cuts."

When mistakenly told about a reported death in Prince Edward Island, Ritz said: "Please tell me it's [Liberal MP] Wayne Easter."

I'm a bad, bad person, but "death by a thousand cold cuts" made me laugh.

I think it's funny, too. But I'm also not in charge of fixing the problem, nor am I on a conference call with the people who are trying to make sure that nobody else dies.

Oh, and I'm also not an official who represents the Interim Placeholder Government Of Canada.

While I admire black humour, not in the people responsible for food safety thank you very much. I find it funny that two separate ministers got egg on their face in the pretty much the same day.

When the CPC allow their MPs and their staff and their supporters to speak it is inevitable.

This is because the CPC are composed of two kinds of people:
* Inconsiderate, clueless, cruel, entitled, racist, sexist assholes,
and
* Inconsiderate, clueless, cruel, entitled, racist, sexist assholes who are better at hiding it and embarassed when the first group get let out in public.

There is a REASON that the CPC's performance in any election is linearly and inversely proportional to the amount that their prospective MPs are allowed to speak.

I thought the Wayne Easter bit was funny, not so much the listeriosis.

I lol'd.

And personally I'd rather see our politicians cracking the same jokes as the rest of us than be some scripted mouthpiece standing on political correctness.

yeah, but dude... people actually died. A couple months ago. And these are the guys in charge of Food Safety, making bad puns about it. It's just kind of... really tactless.

People were telling ashtray and 'need another seven astronaut' jokes the same day the shuttle exploded.

People need to chill the hell out. The people ultimately responsible for this tragedy aren't in government, it was Maple Leaf. One of these lifetimes people will actually remember that one of the ways of dealing with tension and grief and loss is HUMOUR.

Hell, I know people who were cracking WTC jokes within hours of it happening.

Actually, the food inspection policies which the guy is responsible for kinda contributed. He made comments within days of people dying and made the comment that he hoped it was his critic that died of food poisoning.

I expect a certain gravitas from ministers in charge of multiple departments which have failed to ensure public safety.

The problem is that in many ways, public figures don't get to be 'people'; you may know people who were telling 'need another seven astronauts' jokes, but I'd bet none of them hold public office and made the jokes in public.

I know people who were cracking WTC jokes within hours of it happening.

And I bet none of those people were in charge of writing airport security regulations, and I bet none of those people were *at fault* due to not adequately doing their job.
