A friend of my wife in the UK is undergoing chest surgery and will need three months off work to recover. He may not be able to get the paid leave he was promised by his workplace, meaning he may have to go for a month unpaid.

Anyone know of an assistance program or options he may have, in this case, other than rescheduling the surgery and dropping to the bottom of the waiting list because he "rejected" the appointment slot?

Responses there, please. They don't do me any good.
