I cannot decide whether this is engineered by the United States / some Westerners (by paying off the pirates to claim that they were getting sick and dying) or if it was engineered by the United States / some westerners (by deliberately infecting the pirates beforehand, knowing they were targeting an IRISL cargo ship from Nanjing), or if it was engineered by the Chinese government (who have plausible deniability given from bribed shipping officials) to frame Iran (who regularly operates shadily labelled shipping) for importing chemical weapons, nuclear waste, or enriched, radioactive materials (if so, this effect would come from well-above-fuel-grade materials) in order to present a justification for the US & UN to perform a pre-emptive strike, or if it was happenstance and is being reported and re-reported because it can be interpreted as any of the above.
OR, it might have been done by Iran specifically to deter pirates.
Or it might be happenstance but Iran might well use it as "Wouldn't it be a shame if youse happened to hijack one of our ships and youse skin melted off" deterrents.
