what reason could anyone have for locking their sidearm to their rifle like that?

(no subject)

Date: 2008-10-08 04:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] theweaselking.livejournal.com
The sidearm becomes the foregrip of the weapon, giving you increased accuracy with the sidearm, a backup weapon in case of primary weapon failure or lacking time to reload, and allowing you to use a silenced pistol as a primary weapon while maintaining the full power of the longarm if rifled fire or automatic fire is called for.

Basically, it makes a certain amount of sense, in specialised cases.

But the kind of mind that thinks of this is also the kind of mind that thinks up used schoolgirl panty vending machines.

The Russians and Americans have decided that you really do 12 gauge shotguns under-slung below an assault rifle.

Really? Strange. I don't see a late teens/early twenties Israeli girl fucking the sidearm with a strap-on.

That would still be sexual perversion, which is a Japanese thing.

Israelis go for *military* perversion. You know, inflatable tanks. Mounting a pistol under your rifle. Belt-fed beanbag launchers. That kind of thing.

The U.S. army actually used inflatable tanks as decoys in a fake military base just within sight range of German scouts at Calais, France before the Normandy landings.

This resulted in a large portion of Nazi troops being assigned to the defense of Calais, and not Normandy.

Yup. Operation Fortitude. I think it was actually a UK operation. I believe the Inflatable Tank was invented by British stage magician Jasper Maskelyne, who also used trucks dressed as tanks in the Desert War.

And the double-irony being that the name "tank" resulted from another attempt at disguising military hardware movements.

You seem to have a clue about guns, something I don't have. Does this attachment give them enough of a grip on the larger weapon to handle the kickback?

(no subject)

Date: 2008-10-08 08:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] theweaselking.livejournal.com
Most of the kickback will actually be absorbed by the back hand and the shoulder. The forward hand is for aiming. And I don't know about practice, but *in theory* this setup locks the pistol in so that you're effectively adding a totally stationary forward grip. So in theory, it should work.

At first glance I thought WTF? But it actually makes a great deal of sense. Having a secondary weapon already in hand when your primary jams makes a tremendous amount of sense. That 1-2 seconds could be life and death. The silencer thing seems incredibly limited in use, but I can see a use there as well.

My question is whether or not the mount is solid enough that you can use the primary weapon while having your aiming hand on the handgun. If not, the advantage isn't anywhere near as significant.

Better idea: design a firearm with redundant firing chambers so that if one of them jams, the other still functions. Then find a way of not making it unusably heavy.
