Short version: I've made my way out of the Vault and spotted voices that are dead ringers for Liam Neeson and Malcolm McDowell already. It doesn't seem like you can be quite as sociopathic as earlier Fallout games without being "evil", but that's okay because I shot a few security guys in the head *and their heads popped completely off how awesome is that*.
Real review coming once I've played enough to actually know what I'm talking about beyond "Overseer is a dick and I look forward to stabbing him with my Dynamite Spear when I go back to Vault 101".
Heh. The first time, I shot him as soon as he yelled for the guards and I got screamed at by Amata about how "he wasn't threatening you!", so I reloaded to check.
And it's true! He *isn't* threatening you, and he doesn't attack unless you attack him first, and all of the guards are already gone!
And so, since I like Amata more than I hate him, I let him live the second time, and started exploring Meltdown and the surrounding area.
And then my wife stole my computer and wouldn't let me have the game back, and then the power went out from the blizzard, and now it is morning and I go to work.
Woha what? When I found the Overseer he and a guard had Amata in a room and where interrogating her. When I rushed in to save her the guard and the Overseer attacked.
They did, but once you kill the guard (which I did first because he was ARMED and attacking me and Overseer was not, Overseer was running around but not actually attacking) Overseer becomes nonhostile and demands your surrender.
PS: I figure he'll have killed Amata by the time I make my way back in there, as a direct result of my letting him live. I'm okay with that, since "I" don't know that's going to happen, and it's one of the reasons why Operation Dynamite Spear is in my future plans.
It doesn't hurt that the laptop is brand new... but it wasn't that crazy expense, $1400 from Dell. It runs nicely..and I don't know about theweaselking, but I beat the Overseer to death with a baseball bat before I left the vault.
There's a tool that of course I can't remember the name of to play PC games natively on Linux (and no, it's not WINE. This is a *gaming*-specific project).
I hear it also works on Macs. Support for some individual games is better than others, and it's not free (but it might as well be - I think it's a $5/mo subscription for their updates), and you vote on which games you want them to add support for next.
When I am super rich, I will pay Ron Perlman to come to my house just to say those lines. I mean, I'd offer him a beer or something, too. I'm not a complete dick.
Man, I had to take the metro through DC to get to the airport yesterday - Metro Center station was covered in Fallout 3 ads, banners hanging everywhere, large posters on the floor. They seriously took over that station. It was actually kind of funny.
I haven't gotten to the end-game stuff he complains about. The game definitely *is* less funny than 1, 2, or Tactics, but that doesn't mean it's completely jokeless, only that the jokes are less over the top and absurd. He's absolutely right about the interface being a little clunky (and, worse, taking a second to come up "cinematically" instead of just fucking opening the way I want it to) and that it is in desperate need of hotkeys, but that's because there's a fair bit of stupidity *required* when you're trying to work on a console, and Fallout is definitely a console game that happens to have a PC version, just like Oblivion.
(Thing he doesn't mention that the commenters do: DEAR GOD YOU ARE SLOW. Very cool, it's a legitimate jogging pace, but now I would please like to double my running speed so that I don't spend forever getting places)
Thing is, everything except the jokes will absolutely be fixed shortly in a fan-made mod as long as you're not dumb enough to buy a console version, and everything he says the game does right he is damning with faint praise.

No visit to the land of Fallout is complete without a trip through The Dunwich Building and a tour of The Republic Of Dave.
