My first thought on seeing this (in the Russian LJ) was, okay, who's walking who? On second thought, it's pretty obvious. Dog walking baby!

.....yes, it's cute. But as the owner of several large dogs I can tell you there are about eleventy billion things wrong with this idea. Number one of them being that if a squirrel happens to cross their path you can kiss that baby goodbye.

It's possible to train a dog well enough to let this work.

Most dogs are nowhere near that well-trained.

We had a Great Dane when I was a kid. He was taller than me at his shoulder. Guess who's job it was to walk Duke in the morning/afternoon? Yep, ME! Never had a problem until the day Duke saw his arch nemesis. The poodle from around the block. I was a walking road rash for a good part of that summer.

I grew up around Danes too, my godmother raised them. Fortunately, they were all fairly well trained around kids, as her husband the vet used their Danes and cattle dogs for educational presentations at the local schools. To this day, I'm not interested in dogs that can't fit into the "large working dog" catagory.

well, there *is* a photographer, and it takes about 10 seconds, at most, to take a photo.

In ten seconds, that dog could be across the street and still moving, and if the kid was lucky she'd have let go of the leash by then.

When I was younger I walked our German Sheppard in the woods behind the house during the winter ... dog saw something that made her run ... I fell, slid and ended up head first into a tree. In the dog's defense she realized that something was "wrong" with me and came back to lick my face ... which did little for monstrous head / back / neck ache I was left with.

Though I don't know if kiddo would hold on to the leash if doggie stared to run.
