Baptism by proxy, what? I thought baptism was something you had to willfully submit to, not something that could just be done to you.

Even if it wasn't, I find something distinctly immoral about posthumously "converting" people who were killed because of their religion.

Luckily, the Mormon prophets have a special dispensation from God to fix that.

Mormon postmortem baptism is kind of cute, like a dumb, friendly dog bringing you your slippers in August--it's too hot for slippers to begin with, and anyway, they're dripping with dog spit and now you probably have to throw them out, so the dog is providing you with a completely unnecessary, stupid service that isn't actually a service, but it meant well.

The Mormons are thinking: "We're giving dead people who never heard the full Word of the Lord the chance to be redeemed into the light of God!" And you're thinking: "Ahghad, covered in Mormon drool."

I think the Mormon belief is that the posthumous baptisms just give the dead the chance to be redeemed--like an invitation to an Amway meeting; you don't have to sign up. But they can't imagine that anyone wouldn't want to after they're dead and have seen The Truth and are so sad they didn't have the True Religion when they were alive.

The mormons did this with some of my ancestors too, who were decidedly of a non-Jewish variety. My grandmother was a genealogist and went to SLC to check out their genealogical archives, which were apparently a pretty good source of information.

They keep those genealogical archives because they use them to perform postmortem baptisms. That's what I've been told, anyway.

I still love what the writers for Vampire: the Masquerade did with the Mormon genealogical archives, where one of the endgame scenarios involves a sorcerer using them as the equivalent of a True Name for humanity.

yeah, I'm not sure i get either side. the mormons are clearly screwed in hte head a) for thinking they're helping rather than insulting and b) for thinking that they can do this. but at the same time, the jews are basically upset because the mormons say that dead jews are mormons. What? I can't wave a wand over you and tell you that you're a druid and have it be so. I promise. I mean, i get that the Jews are insulted and they have every reason to be, but this seems like a really weird case of two sets of lunatics upset about pixie dust.

So the mormons are saying that the jews are not nessisarily renouncing their faith after death, just being given the option to do so? If that's the case, then I no longer mind.

That's the effect on the *soul*. The effect in the world is that the Mormon church records, in their archives, that those people were good and loyal Mormons.

Basically, the Mormons are editing history to say that the Holocaust was a pogrom against Mormons and that these people were *Mormon* victims. The rest of the world doesn't take this seriously, but then you have all the brainwashed victims of Mormonism gorwing up being told about all these classic Mormon martyrs....

As much as I think the Justin Achili-approved version of Gehenna was awesome, the two where everything goes to very public hell are far more entertaining to read.

This is what they have to say about it.

That article also claims that dead baptisees are not entered into the membership records, but who knows what the kiddos are being taught at Sunday School.

Given the Mormon church's record on the truth so far, I don't trust *anything* they say. Not even about their own internal doctrines.

That article also claims that dead baptisees are not entered into the membership records

This was not true the *last* two times they got sued to stop claiming that holocaust victims were retroactive Mormons. Why would we think it might be true this time?

It annoys me mostly because Mormons have a massive persecution complex and do things like this so they can say that they were being oppressed HISTORICALLY, too.

um. probably not. one of the big problems here is that the JC-LDS records are considered acceptable proof of religious affiliation. If someone looks for that and finds that a persons last listed religion is LDS, that is what would be accepted as correct. Regardless of what the person would have wanted.

There's a lawsuit about this every few years, and the Mormons always claim they've stopped the practice of adopting dead Jews and claiming that the Holocaust was about murdering Mormons, and they always promise to not do it again, and then a few years later they're found to be lying about that just as they've been lying about everything else all along, too.

I will happily persecute the Mormons, like when I wrote a letter to the state government urging them not to give the Mormons a zoning easement they wanted so they could put up an ugly-ass steeple on the ugly-ass church they build next to Rte 2! All kinds of persecution!

Seems to me that Jews complaining about this is giving it credence, like the baptisms actually do something. Instead they should just shrug and ignore it, because it's just some stupid assclown goyim chanting useless mumbojumbo.
