Baptism by proxy, what? I thought baptism was something you had to willfully submit to, not something that could just be done to you.

Even if it wasn't, I find something distinctly immoral about posthumously "converting" people who were killed because of their religion.

Luckily, the Mormon prophets have a special dispensation from God to fix that.

I think the Mormon belief is that the posthumous baptisms just give the dead the chance to be redeemed--like an invitation to an Amway meeting; you don't have to sign up. But they can't imagine that anyone wouldn't want to after they're dead and have seen The Truth and are so sad they didn't have the True Religion when they were alive.

Mormon postmortem baptism is kind of cute, like a dumb, friendly dog bringing you your slippers in August--it's too hot for slippers to begin with, and anyway, they're dripping with dog spit and now you probably have to throw them out, so the dog is providing you with a completely unnecessary, stupid service that isn't actually a service, but it meant well.

The Mormons are thinking: "We're giving dead people who never heard the full Word of the Lord the chance to be redeemed into the light of God!" And you're thinking: "Ahghad, covered in Mormon drool."

The mormons did this with some of my ancestors too, who were decidedly of a non-Jewish variety. My grandmother was a genealogist and went to SLC to check out their genealogical archives, which were apparently a pretty good source of information.

They keep those genealogical archives because they use them to perform postmortem baptisms. That's what I've been told, anyway.

I still love what the writers for Vampire: the Masquerade did with the Mormon genealogical archives, where one of the endgame scenarios involves a sorcerer using them as the equivalent of a True Name for humanity.

There's a lawsuit about this every few years, and the Mormons always claim they've stopped the practice of adopting dead Jews and claiming that the Holocaust was about murdering Mormons, and they always promise to not do it again, and then a few years later they're found to be lying about that just as they've been lying about everything else all along, too.

Seems to me that Jews complaining about this is giving it credence, like the baptisms actually do something. Instead they should just shrug and ignore it, because it's just some stupid assclown goyim chanting useless mumbojumbo.

Yeah, you're right. They should completely ignore the desecration of their heritage, not to mention the intentional disrespect brought on by the posthumous religious conversion of their dead relatives. The relatives that died specifically *because* they subscribed to the faith that the Mormon church is trying to remove them from.

It's not just "chanting useless mumbojumbo." Records are being destroyed/altered/created regarding this change in faith. It doesn't matter if they're taken seriously now. The records will still exists generations later.

I want to convert to Islam right now and do exactly that.

...oh, wait, Islam has all those tenets about not forcing people to convert. DANG STUPID CIVILIZED RELIGIONS (for a certain degree of civilisation)

---

Here's the other thing, you guys: Jews traditionally and constantly endured forced baptisms throughout history. In the context of the past couple thousand years, this Mormon shit is just another heaping of shit on an oppressed minority. That's why they're so pissed.

You know you've got a really special religion when I can't take on faith that Jack Chick (http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0061/0061_01.asp) is full of crap when he talks about your beliefs.

Oh God. Chick's framing it in the worst light possible and he's got a couple of really spurious strawmen *coming in response to the Mormons*, but he's got the Mormon doctrine just about right!

He missed that the Mormons claim that the native Americans were childrend of the tribe of Israel (conclusively disproven by genetics) and that Mormons believe that a great many battles were fought using iron weaponry centuries before iron weapons reached North America (conclusively disproven by archaeology), but those are sciences he himself doesn't believe in, so it's not surprising he glossed over them.

So the Mormons have loony beliefs. So do almost all other religions when you examine them closely.

Jack Chick and his sidekicks are fundies that believe God wrote the bible, rather than the people that actually did the writing and editing.
