Yeah, that must be it. Nothing to do with the perjury or presenting false documentats.

If he wasn't Canadian, those wouldn't have been problems.

(More seriously: I just like my headline more)

Man, how embarassing must it be to be Canadian if you have to lie about being a U.S. Citizen to hide your canadicity?

Seriously? A handwriting analyst? I'm so embarrassed I was born in that state right now..

The prosecutor tied together evidence from Riess' Canadian birth certificate, passport and passport application, and testimony from a handwriting expert to prove he was a Canuck.

Handwriting analysis, huh?

Anyway, is Sudbury, Ontario really shitty enough that Los Angeles looks like a better choice?

Yes.

Sudbury is like Newark.

I think there might be more jobs in Newark, even with the US Economy being what it is these days.

They've been doing interviews on the CBC with Engineers and other professionals who went out to the oil patch from Sudbury looking for work and got stuck in retail jobs - and apparently this is still an improvement over Sudbury.

There probably used to be more jobs in Sudbury, too. It's basically nickel mining.

Fun, fun.

5 years? That seems a bit draconian. Had an American lied about being Canadian, he or she would have just been deported.

And, of course, Stephen Harper's old new government has already proclaimed that it won't stand up for Canadians arrested abroad.

I wonder what his punishment will be in Canada when he is deported there. (If he survives five years in American prison, that is.)

So for the crime of lying about being a citizen, he's being given five years of citizenship?

I'm sure that makes sense to someone.

Prison kind of deprives people of their rights to citizenship...

I'm just saying, deporting the guy rather than spending five years feeding, clothing, and housing him on the taxpayer dime would make more sense to me.

And I'm just saying that prison isn't a country club.

Usually, anyway.

Surely this will be appealed. No matter how bad lying is, it's cruel and unusual to send a man back to Sudbury.

Five years? What the fuck, America. Five years in your "we moved the 7th circle of hell to the real world" prison system for feigning citizenship? What the hell.
