First thing this morning, I took the dog for a walk (by which I mean she waited politely while I got dressed and attached a leash, then she dragged me all over North America at a furious pace) down to the vet that's around the corner.

Turns out: She is chipped, and her owners were absolutely frantic about her getting loose. Her name is Canuck, which is the Inuktitut word for "Snowflake". She was being dogsat by her owners' parents, and she'd figured out how to open their back gate. The home? Barely three blocks from mine, but since she was a new dog in a new place, she didn't *know* the place well, and so she never pulled at it or tried to run home when out.

So, happy ending: Lovely dog back with owners, they've promised to transfer her tags to her new collar *as soon as they get her home*, and my legs are going to fall off from keeping up with the beast.

I guess you got your cardio in for the month, eh?

I'm glad she's back with her people. They must have been out of their heads with worry.

I'm glad they were frantic to get her back.

I'm a regular at a dog park up here and at least once a month someone abandons a dog there knowing that someone will take them in. Often they're dogs with a lot of energy or the XL or Giant breeds.

That's awful. But how can people not realize if they get a large breed large that it will, in fact, be large

It looked so cute in the store?

Luckily all the dogs that are left at the dog park ultimately find a home with one of the regulars there, and I think the people who leave them there know that, but it is disconcerting to know how many people at the park have rescued dogs. It's good that caring people now have them, but so unfortunate that they were abandonned in the first place.

Yeah, sure, YOU try keeping up with A SLED DOG for three hours, in heavy winter boots, on ice and snow, with arthritis and tendon damage in both knees.

See how YOU feel the next morning.

Which still fuck up my legs.

Cycling is my preference, and that's fine, but I can't bike with a strange dog, and running leaves me hurting for a few days. Like today.

Still, fun dog.

Yes, dog looks fun. I'd get one, if I could have a pet in my apt.

A little. And I'm also thinking that while she was great, she was also *way* too energetic for my household, since I don't have enough room to let her entertain herself.

Sounds like the best kind of pet ownership learning experience.

I used to think I wanted a giant, bouncy, energetic, dog... until my parents got one when I was in college.

Now I think stuffed animals are awfully nice.

Oh, we knew well in advance that we didn't want a high-energy dog, or a big dog, and we were *very* leery of taking in a stray who was right at our upper limit for acceptable size *and* from a high-energy workhorse breed.

As in, if we couldn't find the owners we were *still* most likely going to put her up for adoption, and we knew that going in. But we also didn't want to, and were willing to consider the possibility that we might be *able* to keep her, because our misgivings might be unfounded.

And, hey, on day 2 she was very much less excited, less active, and less trouble, so it *might* have worked out if we'd given it a week.

But we had absolutely no illusions, going in. Our ideal dog is smaller, from a more sedate breed - staffordshire terrier or unusually small rottie.
