Today

Cons: We are shocked, shocked and appalled that the Liberals would consider making a deal with those traitorous separatist bastards to form a coalition government in parliament!

2000

Cons: Hey, traitorous separatist bastards, please make a deal with us to form a coalition government in parliament.

Note, for the record, that this is *only* news because of the CPC's insane smear campaign against the correct and normal workings of parliament. If they hadn't come out swinging for the fences with their blatantly idiotic opinion that coalitions were evil and wrong, it wouldn't be at all news that they'd tried to build one against the Liberals.

Were they always like that, or have they been taking correspondence courses from our lying right-wing sociopath politicians?

Large does of Texas, with a sprinkling of Alaska. I think it has something to do with all that open space and those oil fumes.

The old Progressive Conservatives weren't this bad (indeed, sometimes they were better at this than their Liberal contemporaries) but this iteration of the Conservatives contains a strong infusion of Angry Western Protest™ which has a tendency to make these broad, sweeping attacks based more on ideology than precedent.

-- Steve used to switch his support between the "Red Tories" and the Liberals, but now despises what has become of Conservatism in Canada.

The Parti is a province-only party. The Bloc are the national-level group, and the most charmingly rank opportunists in Canada.

If your quote is accurate, I think what he's doing is talking about the PQ, but specifically using the term "bloc" ambiguously to make his listeners think the BQ has some kind of nefarious goal beyond "amassing power."

The Likud of today is not what it used to be. It's basically a centrist party now. Still corrupt lying sociopaths, but that hardly distinguishes them from the other corrupt lying sociopaths.

Someday, someone will say of me, "He's a charmingly rank opportunist, but I think you'll admire his presumption". And I will die happy.

Now, I'm certain that things would be kind of fucked up if Quebec were to secede, but I don't think that the PQ's aims have been to Destroy Canada, Twirl Moustaches, or Throw Bombs since some time in the 1960s.

Both the Bloc and the PQ are painfully aware that the people of Quebec currently consider close economic ties with Canada vital to Quebec's economy (and they're right, but sometimes people forget this fact. Not at the moment though!).

It's in Quebec's best interests to save us all from the Cons' current attack of dementia. If Canada goes down, so does Quebec; don't forget that their latest plan for "Separation" included "Still get to use the Loonie as their currency", and "Still get equalization payments from the Canadian Federal Government." Sort of like a teenager who wants to move out but have Mom and Dad pay his rent, groceries, and cellphone bill.
