I don't know if I posted about this, but I went for lunch at a Chinese buffet restaurant in Vanier a couple of weeks ago.
Vanier (it's French - pronounce it "VAN-YAY") is a neighbourhood of Ottawa notorious for the style and culture of it's inhabitants. By which I mean, the lack thereof.
So we walk into the restaurant and the first thing we see is a finely printed professional-looking sign that says "We reserve the right to refuse service to those who deliberately waste our food".
Right next to it, and repeated several times in other places is "Proper attire must be worn and must continue to be worn while in our restaurant."
Near the buffet there was "Health code regulations prohibit eating at the buffet. Please return to your seat before eating".
As you leave the buffet area, as you leave the seating area, and on the door out there is "Please do not leave without paying. Your server is responsible for your bill if you do."
And, I mean, these are all plain, common-sense regulations, but the fact that the restaurant felt they needed to be said really worried me.
The correlation between bad neighborhoods and excellent restaurants is one that I've often observed. (Though what people consider a bad neighborhood in Seattle demonstrates that none of them have been to Washington D.C., and have certainly never been lost in Anacostia at 2 a.m.)
