From the opposite point of view.... The elderly and disabled are a hell of a lot less able to defend themselves then young, healthy people and consequently are more likely to be singled out for attack. For a while I figured I could use my cane, now I can't even hold that well enough to figure I would still have a hold of it if I managed to hit someone with it. Personally, I wonder how hard you have to squeeze to make it work.

It may be easy to use, but it provides a false sense of security.

It'll fail to stop a threat effectively, thereby making situations much much worse.

my guess from the picture is that you have to apply pressure to all three points, not a lot of pressure to one point like on a conventional handgun. Makes it easier to squeeze, but keeps it from accidental firing by brushing against a button.

You might want to re-read Idoru:

"Produced, the cops had pointed out, by a Russian-made device that was hardly more than a cartridge, a tube to contain it, and the simplest possible firing mechanism; these were designed with suicide almost exclusively in mind; there was no way to aim them at anything more than two inches away. Laney had heard of them, but had never seen one before; for some reason, they were called Wednesday Night Specials."

I read both those trilogies so mixed up, so far apart, and interspersed by so many other books that I didn't know they were actually trilogies until long after I was done with them, much less remember that part. I was just making the joke that old people don't like being out past three.
