So, the ex-Socialist Party moron who tanked Ontario's economy with incredibly bad policy is out, leaving the ex-Fascist Party moron who thinks torture is good, thoguht Abu Ghraib was just wonderful, and has spent the last decade in the US pretending to be a Republican and taking bribe money to cheerlead their idiotic policies.

MacKinnon will still get my vote if he's the front runner to replace Brigadier General Idiotboy, but say goodbye to any contributions. When the leader of the only non-stupid party in Canada is stupid, I suddenly lose all my incentive to help them win, and suddenly there's NO possible good result to the election.

I was 12 when Mulroney left office. I was barely paying attention to American politics at the time, never mind other countries'.

So was I, but by that age I was old enough to get a sense of what my family always talked about when they got together (which is mostly politics). Also, the Mulroney gov't, like the Harris gov't, had many negative impacts upon my mother's work (non-profit), so she would talk about that a lot at home. It was really how much Harris fucked over the organisation for which she had basically JUST been hired when I started to realise how much politics really DOES affect each and every one of us, even if we don't see it offhand.

Heck, if GST is all you have then you should be lucky. Between GST and Provincial Sales Tax, our combined taxation on most things was 15%. So a $1 item cost $1.15 and so forth. :/ Some things are only taxable by PST and some only by GST but still.

Oh hell no, we have PST too. But GST was only made permanent (ie. not a wartime-only temporary measure) by Brian Mulroney.

Provincial PC leader Grant Divine on the other hand... around the same time, he put SK into the biggest debt it's ever been in, fucked with the social programs (you don't DO that here. This is where Tommy Douglas is from. We may vote conservative from time to time, but you do NOT fuck with the social programs), and did some more assholish things that I can't remember the specifics of. Selling all our forestry rights exclusively to Weyerhauser, etc. Anyways, over the past 16 years the NDP have brought us to our HIGHEST surplus ever, created jobs, industry is great, the farmers even have rain (not that you can credit them for that, but when the farmers aren't bitching, everyone's happy). We move from Have-Not province to Have province on the equalization payment plan. What do we do? Decide that NDP certainly don't know how to handle money, so we better bring in some conservatives to handle our newfound money for us. Enter the Sask Party: 95% old PC members. Apparently political memory doesn't go back 20 years.

The Ontario recession wasn't nearly so much the fault of Rae (who understands the basic concepts and rules of stimulus spending to escape a recession) as it was of Floyd Laughren, who was the party's choice for minister of finance based mostly on reward for time served. Laughren misdirected spending on a tremendously stupid level and just made everything worse.

I'm a member of the NDP, but I'm a member because I think the party needs more people who do not have their head up their ass when it comes to basic fiscal policy, and the only way to do that is to be one.

There are times when my bf can't tell if I'm really a member of the NDP party b/c I sound like a Conservative. I side with the NDP on what, to me, are the most important factors. However when I talk business, I totally understand the right-wing viewpoint. However, it's the values of the LEFT which should bear some weight on economic policy. They're not mutually exclusive and I wish our governing system would come to realise that. :/

It's interesting when some people hate Bob Rae yet others still love what he did. However at the same time, though many have glowing memories of Trudeau, we overlook the bad things he had implemented as well. I've come to realise that every politician makes good decisions and bad decisions. Whether or not you see them as good or bad depends on whether or not they agree with your personal judgements on what SHOULD happen.

As a foreigner who recently had to read his pro-torture stance let me empahsise that he supported torture "because it might work" - leading me to the conclusion that he is either an idiot who would throw kittens into a threshing machine if someone told him he would get magical wishes for doing so, or he is a cowardly sociopath who would throw kittens into a threshing machine if it seemed to be politically advantageous for him to do so.

Therefore it seems to me that the real question canadians should ask themselves about Ignatieff is; "Would ignatieff purposely make the coalition collapse explosively if it meant he could parachute into the majority tory government that would be formed after the coalition's collapse?"

I can't really see Ignatieff fitting into the CPC gang of thugs; nor do I think him as ruthlessly self-interested as you seem to.

I don't grant the CPC the term "Tory", myself... it has a historical significance that they don't live up to.
