Its not menstruating. Its anus is bleeding.

The parents are heaping a whole mess of trouble on their kid's heads with those names, I don't envy them.

Of course, I am reminded of the story a while back about the lesbian who sued a dog breeder who refused to sell her a puppy after learning her sexual orientation.

Nothing illegal about naming your kids something stupid. So it is discrimination against the family's poltical or whatever beliefs vs the shop's right to refuse service.

Personally, I think the store has the right to refuse service. Of course, I believed the same thing about the dog breeder.

Well, the difference is whether the class being discriminated against is a protected classification. A dog breeder who refused to sell her a puppy after learning her race wouldn't have been able to get away with it. Sexual orientation really should be a protected class, but it won't be recognized as such until the Supreme Court does, which a court with five Catholics on it never will. Racial supremacy ideology isn't, and shouldn't be.

See, while I agree that it's morally unjustifiable* to refuse to conduct a business transaction with a person because they're a member of X group, I think the law would be on the dog breeder's side because of the whole right to refuse service dealie. And, although I'm not happy with people refusing service because of prejudice rather than the customer being a jerk/demonstrating that they weren't fit to own what was being sold**, I think it's less of an infringement upon civil rights than if the seller was forced to make the sale against their wishes. The practical situation would probably improve, but I still couldn't justify it.

Refusing service because the item the customer wants goes against your religious beliefs, as in the case of certain types of birth control, has slightly different factors involved but it's similar enough to warrant a mention. Personally, I think that if you own the business it'd be fair enough to just not stock something that you're opposed to the idea of anyone using, but I don't think employees should have the option to interfere with the transaction like that.

*If the dog breeder thought lesbians couldn't take care of pets, then I could at least see how they could justify their decision. Wouldn't make it okay, but at least they'd just be acting out of ignorance rather than active homophobia. (Could be a mix of the two, if the dog breeder honestly believed that, say, she would intentionally hurt the dog because that's the sort of evil thing lesbians do in between demon worship sessions and all-female orgies.)

**Speaking hypothetically, here. I know nothing about this particular case except what was mentioned above, so I have no idea if there was any logical reason to deny a puppy to the woman in question or not. I'm assuming not, but I'm trying to avoid jumping to conclusions.

psst...most names are a reflection of parents ideology.

that's how we end up with things like girls names and boys names, for example. it reflects the ideology of separate genders.

or names taken from the Bible or other religious books.

these two just took it to an unprecedented extreme.
