Date: 2008-12-16 10:06 pm (UTC)Of course, I am reminded of the story a while back about the lesbian who sued a dog breeder who refused to sell her a puppy after learning her sexual orientation.
Nothing illegal about naming your kids something stupid. So it is discrimination against the family's poltical or whatever beliefs vs the shop's right to refuse service.
Personally, I think the store has the right to refuse service. Of course, I believed the same thing about the dog breeder.

Date: 2008-12-20 10:26 am (UTC)Refusing service because the item the customer wants goes against your religious beliefs, as in the case of certain types of birth control, has slightly different factors involved but it's similar enough to warrant a mention. Personally, I think that if you own the business it'd be fair enough to just not stock something that you're opposed to the idea of anyone using, but I don't think employees should have the option to interfere with the transaction like that.
*If the dog breeder thought lesbians couldn't take care of pets, then I could at least see how they could justify their decision. Wouldn't make it okay, but at least they'd just be acting out of ignorance rather than active homophobia. (Could be a mix of the two, if the dog breeder honestly believed that, say, she would intentionally hurt the dog because that's the sort of evil thing lesbians do in between demon worship sessions and all-female orgies.)
**Speaking hypothetically, here. I know nothing about this particular case except what was mentioned above, so I have no idea if there was any logical reason to deny a puppy to the woman in question or not. I'm assuming not, but I'm trying to avoid jumping to conclusions.
