Dogs, actually. There are some abnormally large coyotes in my area that have been luring out and killing neighbourhood dogs. And not just small dogs, either.

I'm assuming food in in short supply this winter, and it's making them more desperate than in previous years.

Ah yes, they are fond of cats around here. AND it's been noticed that they are exhibiting more Wolf-pack like behaviors. So going after larger domestic animals doesn't surprise me, sadly. There have also been a couple of reports -out of Tahoe Basin- of Coyotes being spotted on ski slopes during the day, which is pretty bold of them. In one case, one supposedly chased a skier down the slope. So, yeah- I can see your point of view about Coyotes...

They do the same thing here but it's not the coyotes' fault that humans are leaving them free-roaming, tasty dinners outside!

Best way to avoid having a cat/dog eaten by a coyote, owl or other predator: have a fenced in yard and insure that your pets aren't free-roaming.

Yeah, that's the problem lately - the usual precautions aren't working.

I never meant that it's the coyote's fault - I love coyotes! - just that that's probably what [livejournal.com profile] sanityimpaired has against coyotes.

Sure coyotes eating pets is all part of the natural order... but that doesn't make you feel much better when it's your pet that's eaten.
