The policy doesn't ban dye, bleach, or styling. It bans "unnatural colours" - which, I would tend to agree with the students, means things like blue or green or purple or fluorescents.
I agree. But it seems like the principal's sense that it means that you shouldn't dye your hair in such way that is distractingly obviously dyed, and that's probably not a silly rule for a school with a strict dress code. If the girls made the left side of their head auburn and the right side platinum, it is an unnatural look even if the colors are natural.
Of course, the principal is an asshat anyway because his first impulse was to deny education to his students for not following his interpretation of the rules, instead of getting the rules rewritten so that future students couldn't claim ignorance of the spirit of the law. From the behavior of these administrators, you'd think that their primary job duty was maintaining order and not teaching students.
From what I see, the policy should read "Students may not dye or colour their hair." The wording doesn't accurately represent the intent, and I suspect that's the actual issue here.
