I have to admit; every time I've visited Calgary has filled me with similar urges. But I'm still here, proving that man is superior to animal. Or possibly just dumber.

Could be worse, could be Saskatoon. That entire city *smells like dog food*.

I've never been to Saskatoon. But I have been to Winnipeg, which I remember for two things only.
1) Possibly to dull the pain of 2, mixed drinks were $1.50 ($0.75 on the cheap night) and beer was $1.00 and $0.50, respectively.
2) Mosquitoes have fucking *teeth*.

Yeah, there's something to be said for the kind of mosquitos that breed when you've got nothing but flat, horizontal bedrock on the surface, meaning giant puddles of standing water for 1000km in any direction.

And yet.. Ontario has the largest percentage of wetlands in Canada. Still. If we keep destroying them, it certainly won't stay that way. :/ Also, Canada has a large amount of wetlands compared to the rest of the world, too. I forget the exact numbers but I could probably find them readily enough.

Saskatchewan was mostly slough before we filled it in for farmland. The mosquitos remember this, and take their revenge.

I think the mosquitos are just pissed that they have to live in Saskatchewan.

I would be.

I had not known that. :) I always had been given the impression the prairies had always been plains.

I have definitely heard the mosquitos and blackflies further north in Ontario are large enough to qualify as "birds." lol So not too surprised if they're also in the prairies.

All of these cities are still in Canada, and therefore somewhat superior to where those of us in the USA live. I mean, there are some pretty fantastic US cities but I still think I might rather be Canadian for a lot of reasons...although the somewhat more permissive and lax animal welfare laws get my hackles up.

The article is using outdated information. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/2009/02/03/cgy-stingrays-cause-of-death.html

What do stingrays have to do with suicidal goats?

"The zoo claims (pdf) the victim "became entangled in an enrichment toy that had been in the exhibit for several years", specfically a "a ball on the end of a rope", as Reuters puts it. While the video footage did show keepers "trying to resuscitate the animal", the zoo has rather suspiciously still not explained (pdf) the mysterious death of 41 stingrays in May last year."
