"So, I'm glad you all could attend. I wanted to update you on the status of our company and some recent developments.

As you know, we've just launched the new product that you've all been working on, and we've gotten some very impressive responses. Our existing clients have asked us to get trial copies and we have a dozen new clients signed up to evaluate it who have purchased training. So the future looks bright and you should all be proud of the work you've done.

Oh, and the VCs have lost confidence, they're pulling our money, we've declared bankruptcy, and you're all fired.

Any questions?"

/Yes, this was a real meeting. No, I did not lose my job. These are, however, one of my several clients, so I've just taken an unscheduled pay cut.
// And got a 3-day weekend out of the deal!

This seems to be going around like whoa today. Glad you're still employeed. WTF, venture capitalists? Why so unconfident? I wish I had a Joker icon for this.

Gotta love the VCs...finished product just gets ready to ship, the customers are happy and the orders are coming in and...hey, I don't think this is gonna work, close up shop!

Idiots.

It's worse than that. But the details start getting... proprietaryish.

I've been involved with two downsizes among my clients. Money in my pocket -- short term -- helping them move servers, network infrastructure and workstations to new, smaller, windowless offices. Not so nice for them, but they are trying to keep their businesses afloat in these troubled financial times. Both of the companies laid off half of their staff too.

Ouch.

Any chance of them finding new investors?

Aslo sometimes "vulture capitalists" for people who specialize in mining a dead or dying company.

Well, here's to the successful execution of The Plan so that those involved can give a raspberry to the previous VC, call them wankers and ask them if they're sorry they aren't making a fabulous return on their investment.

Good god. Or maybe not so good. Well, OK, I'm sure god has nothing to do with it, but you know what I mean.

Are the VCs abdicating any financial claim to the product? If the company manages to get through this, will the VCs still own it?

... What. My mind can't parse both together. It's all so contradictory.

So despite good feedback, the whole thing imploded?

That sounds like a lot of suck, glad you still have a job at least. Can't trust those Ventrue Capitalists.

Nearly exactly this happened to me on Christmas Day, 2003. The experience left me with a...jaundiced opinion of VCs and their competence at managing money.

That's... unexpected and odd. Good wishes and hopes for the future? And maybe a large hammer for the VCs?
