I just watched a helicopter gunship go by, sideways, at roof level, with guys hanging off the runners.

That was pretty awesome.

Going to school, I once got to see a nice close-up view of one of the 'infamous' black helicopters, zipping in and landing.

Then again going to a school that had a gross metric ton of DARPA projects makes for fun stories.

It's not where I live, it's where my client's office is.

Which is to say, Ottawa, right along the fastest route between Ottawa International Airport and the Canadian House of Parliament.

Which is to say, the route the Secret Service picked this morning to get Barack Obama downtown.

More likely it was light to medium transport.

People just don't ride the runners of gunships, outside of movies.

I was pretty sure it had guns on it.

The guys on the side definitely had guns.

But I really didn't get a good enough look to ID it.

Gunships are generally attack helicopters.

There are a lot of small rotary wing aircraft which look somewhat similar, and are designed for troop lift to the tune of 4-6 operators.

It's the US military, guns go on everything.

And for transport helos, their primary mission is landing near injured people. The people that injured them tend to still be around and they have guns too. :)

It actually happen, since SOF pers did it in Afghanistan in 2002 in an emergency situation.

That's an emergency situation, not exactly a motorcade guard.

It's happened several times since, and training takes place in certain circles to support it.

It wasn't likely a helicopter gunship such as an Apache or Cobra. It was more likely an AH or MH-6, or something similar.

Point is, they wouldn't do it for a motorcade guard.

And no, it didn't have the narrow profile of an apache. Much more round body, obviously intended to transport people. It did, however, if my brief look from a block away was correct, have a nice big gun mounted on it that made me immediately think "that helicopter could shoot me one whole hell of a lot, with the pilot aiming and pulling the trigger" - which is why I said "gunship", as opposed to a transport helicopter with a crew-served gun pointing out the side doors.

I'll happily accept that I used the wrong word. I wasn't meaning to imply "attack helicopter".

(PS: "AH"? Isn't the Apache "AH-64"?)

No, standing on the runners on a gunship will tend to place your head in front of the rocket pods :)

They're not likely to be firing the rocket pods at the President's motorcade, so that makes it okay.
