There's nothing saying the dog hadn't been about to die, so they turned it into a rug. It also makes a good statement regarding using bears or other animals for rugs in the same manner (the irony of why some animals are "ok" for rugs but others aren't). The dog probably had a far more humane death than would be typical of a bear.
