Forget "twist" - the guy stumbles in, bleeding from the head, says he was just hit by a car, and describes the car clearly and without any doubt as one he used to own.
There's no reason to assume "lying" and every reason to assume "hit in the head, bad concussion, if this dude dies in our police station his family will sue so let's get him to a hospital first and ask him about the car that hit him again later."
And, really, everything else in the movie can pretty easily proceed from that point. It just bothered me that the cops didn't even seem to *consider* the most obvious reason why a guy might misidentify the car that hit him.
