Remember that gallery of computer-generated art I mentioned earlier?

It's not just static images. The main side, all those images on the first page, are EXAMPLES. Click the image, click the link at the bottom to launch the applet, and it *generates* new and unique art, with Java.

SEE THIS NOW.

An example, "Happy Place":

"Happy Place renders the resulting configuration of a system of nodes connected together at random. Connections between nodes are considered friendships.

Nodes move about the stage with only two goals in mind:
A. Move close to friends but not closer than some minimum distance.
B. Distance self from non-friends as much as possible.

Initially friends are placed along the perimeter of a circle. Connections between friends favor nodes in close proximity to each other. Immediately after the connected system is started, a rudimentary best-fit structure takes form. Nervously, it re-arranges its configuration as a result of the individual desires of the nodes it is composed of."

This is undoubtedly the coolest site I have seen in a very, very long time.

Oh, and don't just watch the big pictures. They're more impressive, but the smaller ones are fun to watch, too.

Alas, I cannot see the goodness. Firefox wants the Java J2SE plugin, but the Sun site won't let me have it.

Bastards.

So download it manually, install, and go look.

That's the thing -- I can't. The site says the plugin doesn't exist, or at least I can't find it anywhere.

Go to this site:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Three big blue lines down, you'll see this:

J2SE v 1.4.2_06 JRE includes the JVM technology
The J2SE Java Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications

Click on "Download J2SE JRE" (http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/Welcome.jsp?StoreId=22&PartDetailId=j2re-1.4.2_06-oth-JPR&SiteId=JSC&TransactionId=noreg)

And I have no idea if that last hyperlink will work. If not, follow the instructions.

Download this file. Run it - allow it to install and associate itself with your browsers. Enjoy.
