I liked the Dr. Manhattan Bomb, too (though it lacked that Outer Limits resonance).
Did you notice the signs in the Antarctic lair that labeled the big McGuffin project as "SQUID"? In two showings, I didn't quite manage to see what that stood for.
Of course there was. You had to show the degree to which Veidt's company could modify existing life in order to explain why *Veidt himself* is so heavily modified.
The cat doesn't explain that A pink cat serves to point out an inconsistency in the story. One of the people I was with said out loud "Ok, WTF is that" when the cat walked on screen. My wife said the cat should have made an on screen apperance earlier so that it didn't look like someone let a random CGI animal on screen.
I like the squid ending better because it actaully gives long term hope for humanity. In the book I imagined that with the world looking outside they would start exploring the solar system and focus outward. The movie didn't give me any of that beyond we have delayed the destruction of the world for 100 years
The cat doesn't *alone* explain that. And yes, she should have been onscreen earlier, and yes, it would only have taken a minute to explain further than "genetic engineering" being one of the things VeidtCorp does.
However: a) The movie was too damn long already b) Leaving the cat out completely would have made the screaming fanboys (who include the director) even MORE screamy.
Because you secretly like it when people make movies you don't like, you dirty slut. Get over yourself and come back where you belong, or it'll be even worse for you next time.
