Unsurprising: The pope is an antiscience moron. Only somewhat surprising: The pope is an unrepentant nazi, and anyone who takes him seriously, catholic or not, is an accessory.

Next?

Yeah- saw the headline this morning and couldn't physically make myself read the rest of the article... the stupid- it burns, and there are not enough high explosives in the WORLD to express how I feel about this.

(It's right up there with the one about how WASHING MACHINES are supposed to be the greatest thing towards freedom for women... WTF?)

I talked about this with my Catholic coworker today. He posits that Ratzinger's selection was a sort of sop to the "traditionalist" wing of the Catholics, following WojtyŁa's long and relatively liberal reign. Essentially, it's standard Vatican politics, and also keeps the pattern of following a long-lived Pope with one who is expected to pop his clogs any year now.

Nonetheless, Ratzinger is a monumentally regressive douchebag and he can dry up and blow away right now if i have any say in it.

I don't care WHY they picked NaziPope as a pope.

I care only that there is, theoretically, a billion people who are supposed to take NaziPope seriously, and those people are only *marginally* more fucked up than the morons who worship Mohammaed(PBUH)Pope and FredPhelpsPope.

Eh, that's like expecting 300 million people who were supposed to take Dumbya seriously. A lot happens when you're a long way away from the Vatican. And there isn't a Muslim pope-like position, either; not even sure if there is one for each of the various Muslim flavors...

I think we're evolving past religion, but evolution takes a long fucking time.

I dunno about him just being political. If it was about politics, they'd bow down to the 75% of Catholics whowant to see female priests.

Yup. Besides, the Bible makes it clear that women can't be trusted for making rational decisions and we all know the reliability of that book.

Keep in mind that this is a story about a man who has been celibate (probably) for 58 years speaking with authority about sex and a sexually transmitted disease.

Shockingly, this professional clergyman's answer is "join my club and stop fucking. Problem solved. My representative will pass around a plate on Sunday, put some money in it."

The Catholics at least don't take him seriously. In Europe, almost all the Catholic countries are basically dying out, despite the Church's focus on fecundity. Looks like he plays a similar role as the Queen in the Commonwealth, a kind of symbol of unity which people celebrate with great pomp and circumstance and then ignore.

I am referring to them having less than 2.1 children per woman (replacement level reproduction), with the exception of Ireland. For much of my lifetime, drastically below that. Immigration makes up for the shortfall in some countries, but it is hard to credit the Pope with that.

YEah, Italy is crashing drastically, with like 1.1 replacement. People forget that the geometric stuff happens in reverse also.

While I don't think they're dying out - the birth rate in western and southern Europe is pretty low regardless of religion - but the religiosity is certainly reducing rapidly. And I think the more extreme and crazy the pope is the more he will drive younger people from the church

Yes, the great irony of life is that the more you educate women, the later they wait until reproduction and the fewer children they will have. So in time we start getting negative population growth. Couldn't come too soon, either! There's too many people on this planet already!

It's insane - it's worse than insane, it's evil. The lies that the catholic church have been spreading about AIDS are nothing short of genocide - and it is by NO MEANS limited to the current pope. The last pope was easily as bad - and as evil - on this issue

Technically, he's right that condoms aren't a CURE for AIDs. But, it was never intended to be a cure, just a way of preventing its spread. But his claim that condoms make it WORSE? MIght as well be vomiting feces.

I wish he was; as [livejournal.com profile] sparkindarkness points out above, saying things like that when he knows there will be people who will listen to what he's spouting amounts to murder in my book. Vomiting whatever at least would not kill people.
