I honestly have no adequate response for that. THE HELL?

Yeah, I'm cheering for Stephanie Meyers and her lawyers at this point.

Wow.

I can't even imagine how they thought they'd get away with that. Hint: classic characters that are used in new works are public domain. I can make a new novel about lots of creepy Victorian monsters because nobody owns them.

She owns the characters from Twilight. Hell, the last book didn't come out that long ago. the corpse is still warm for crying out loud.

For the record, I thought Twilight was okay. She's not a great author, but not nearly as bad as most people think. But she IS a member of a psycho cult and wimp.

(however, watch the extras on the Twilight DVD and you'll like her a lot more when you compare her to the director of that movie, who I want to hit with a truck).

Characters are only copyrightable if their creator draws them or hires an artist to draw them.

And character names are only trademarkable if their creator has $375 apiece. Have fun storming the castle!

You know, all debate about the inadequacies of copyright law and the legitimacy of transformative works aside, what really gets me is this:

"When fictional characters become such an intricate part of the popular psyche, as is the case with the Twilight Saga..."

I seriously doubt that this is the next Star Wars, or even the next LeStat.

Criswell Predicts that within a decade at most, these fang-ridden Harlequin Romances will be wholly devoured and digested by the Ogre Noyamotyo, and buried under several strata in the Cesspool of Cultural Detritus. Their legions of ardent fans will largely vanish, most of them denying, even to themselves, any memory of reading the stories or seeing the movie.

Oh, there will always be a dedicated core of fanatics who won't let it go -- even today, you can find web sites dedicated to Judson Scott and The Phoenix.

Except when the subject is a "what and who the hell is that?" sort of thing, rather than a deep cultural shared psyche.
