Or the swastika carved in his forehead.

That's a tattoo. And shush, you.

(Even seeing that, I said "naw, it can't be" at first.)

(I was thinking of photoshopping out the swastika)

Yeah, you probably should have, because it pretty much gives it away.

Agreed. I might not have gotten it without the swastika.

Swastika was what gave it away for me.

I couldn't remember whether he had a swastika there, but decided that the person I thought it was was the sort who might ... so for me it was more the eyes than the swastika that clued me in (noticed before I read down to the advice to look there).

Actually, as much the facial expression as the eyes.

Sadly, I've seen that photo before rather recently... but when I saw it the first time (can't recall where) I did correctly puzzle out his identity before reading up, and yes it was the tattoo that gave him away.

I spent several months reading and researching a report on Bugliosi's book back in my senior year of high school, so this one was pretty easy for me. Assuming I've got it right, I haven't looked yet.

I saw the crazy in his eyes, but couldn't I.D. him until I read the comments. It was the "Helter Skelter" comment that did it.

(Of course- that this all happened before I was born might have something to do with it.)

I was just looking at that the other day. it reminds me of the story in a story that Gaiman wrote about the Sons of Man. Sort of about how Manson was empowered by this force that made him larger than life and later in life he was broken and normal. That's exactly what I think of when I look at that picture. For me there is none of the power that he once held. None of the crazy prophet feel. None of the passion that made me understand why certain people would follow him. Just old busted up guy. He would not be out of place drinking with his buddies at the bar on the corner.

. . . except for the swastika.

(I haven't read that Gaiman story, and now I'm curious -- which collection/anthology/publication was it in?)

It's in Smoke and Mirrors (IIRC, it's in The Goldfish Pool and Other Stories, in that book, but I could be wrong).

Except for the swastika tattoo on his forehead.

Unless you have some really weird corner bars.

And I don't agree. He's gone grey and he no longer looks like he's enjoying every minute of life, but look at his eyes and the set of his expression. That dude? Is still intense.

I'd have to talk to him to see if he's still got the crazy charisma, but that picture means I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he does.

well, the swastika tattoo is harsh, but honestly, if I saw him in public, I'd just assume I was mistaking it for something else.

I think he looks horribly muted, myself, but I could be wrong. They look like very sad eyes in any case.

Manson has this asymmetry to his face that's always been there. The beard kinda disguised it until you watch video or film of him preaching. Half of his face - the right hand half - always has a serene / intense cast to it, and the left-hand side of his face always seems to have a devil-charming animated quality. People read what they want to read in his face.

Now, he looks like he could be - with a little bit of grooming - the guy from the Dos Equis commercial, The Most Interesting Man In The World - "Stay Thirsty, My Friends".
