Nope. They were the most likely to say it was *never* justified, edging out the irreligious by a very small margin, but they still said it was "sometimes" or "often" justified more often than non-churchgoers.
The news article shows that, rather than church attendance being the correlative to backing of torture, it was acceptance of a xenophobic religious doctrine. There is a correlate from acceptance of that doctrine to regular attendance, though.
No, regular attendance *regardless* of doctrine greatly increased support of torture, over nonattendance. Irregular attendance *regardless* of doctrine somewhat increased support of torture, over nonattendance.
Adherence to illiterate psycho doctrine increased it even more, yes, but there was no doctrine that *decreased* it when compared to nonattendance.
The more righteous and morally judgmental a group is, the more likely they are to support human rights violations against a group they perceive as morally reprehensible. Toss in the delusions of persecution and the "do it our way or go to Hell" angle so horrifying common in Christian culture, and this isn't even surprising.
You know, I think we're missing the forest for the trees here. When you combine that 42% and that 52% or whatever, that means that almost half of the people in America think that torture is at least sometimes justified. Let me repeat that - almost half of the people of the self-described best nation in the world approve of torture.
