Don't get me wrong, Thief IV sounds pretty damn good, but... DX3... *swoons* if they can get the best bits from DX1 and DX2, I will be a very, very happy man.
Never played DX1, never liked DX2. I'd heard great things about it, but I came to it 4 years post-release and I found the gameplay and interface simply painful.
So DX3 doesn't really move me in the way that Thief 4 does.
The person who lent me DX2 was quite clear that DX1 was the better game, but that he'd liked DX2 as well. I just never got a chance to play DX1 and DX2 was, well, crap.
It's almost like my problems with Fallout 1 and 2. I started with Fallout Tactics, and while I liked the story from 1 and 2 more, I simply couldn't stand playing without the interface improvements from Tactics.
I had a similar, although less critical problem with going to X-Com 1 from X-Com 2: Not being able to reserve TUs to kneel and not being able to zero TUs to avoid Opportunity Fire were sorely missed. But 1 was so much a better game (and so much less punishing) that it wasn't as big a deal.
Yeah DX1 was definitely far, far better than 2. The storyline behind 1 was SO engrossing that I just couldn't stop playing it till I finished it. Sadly though I think that despite the fact that I got DX2 the day it came out and had it finished 36 hours later, they shouldn't have made a sequel - for me, the impact that 1 had was that the evolution of the storyline was completely unexpected, and it just kept getting deeper and deeper into it to a state of High Awesomeness. They did a similar thing with 2, but for anyone who had played 1, they were already expecting it, and if they hadn't played 1 I don't think they'd really get 2 fully. So I liked 2, but mainly because it rubbed an itch I'd had since finishing 1.
Having said that, I definitely need another DX fix, and hopefully this time they'll sort out a couple of the problems they had with 2.
I didn't like DX1, and really liked DX2. And people who liked DX1 rarely liked DX2 - they were very different games in the end, I think. Either way, I'm keen for DX3.
I think I played one of the Thief series briefly, but it just didn't grab me. Stealth gameplay is pretty hit and miss for me, either it's done in a way I can enjoy, or it's done in a way that frustrates me and my impatience means I end up not enjoying the game.
