Although I re-read a 1950s Arthur C Clarke novel the other day, and had to put it down after about a chapter because so many of the assumptions just didn't ring true.

I had the same problem with Arthur Conan Doyle's Tales of Terror and Mystery. The short story about the giant invisible flying jellyfish that attacked and ate every aircraft to fly about thirty thousand feet ruined the whole rest of the thing for me.
