Current score is "Fucking morons 1, sane people 0", as Daniel Hauser's mother Colleen does her level best to murder him and his father Anthony actively makes himself an accomplice.

For those playing along at home:
Daniel Hauser is an illiterate-due-to-homeschooling 13-year-old with treatable, curable cancer, of a type that is universally fatal if untreated.
Daniel Hauser, being illiterate and 13, is incapable of making informed medical decisions.
Anthony and Colleen Hauser are *out of their fucking minds* and think magic works better than medicine, and are currently attempting to murder their son.

Ignorant stupidity is contagious, but doesn't need to be hereditary.

That boy still could be saved from his parents.

13 might be a bit late, but that's no reason to give up.

13 is still an age where the parents can obstruct information, just like his mother did when she took him away the moment the doctor tried to explain lymphoma to him, as such, you can't really tell what the boy's position would be if he was properly informed.

true. I feel sad for the kid and the parents should be shot in the head for willingly killing their child, but at least this stops that god awful line of reasoning in it's tracks.

Is this kid retarded, or just stupid?

The kid himself isn't to blame, he's not necessarily either - he's just been kept ignorant, not to mention he's well under the age of consent/adulthood. He *can't* make informed decisions for himself, partly due to his age, but not least because he's been kept from any sort of education that would let him do so.

Now his parents on the other hand...

agreed...and it's hard enough for *adults* in the situation of having a serious illness to make a responsible decision. I can't imagine being 13 and my parents (who didn't bother to teach me to read) letting me decide what to do about my cancer. How awful.

I am a little upset that nobody thought ahead and had Daniel removed from the home before this happened. I mean DUH.

This kid's parents have subjected him to constant mental abuse from birth- they never even taught him to fucking read. He can't be held responsible for himself any more than you could blame a Hello World program for not doing your taxes.

The family is an example of why home school is so scorned. While some of us have used the system in place to get a Better education for our kids with it, others don't even administer a basic education, under the excuse of religion or morals.

Apparently there's some other clown involved who also ran away from chemo at 16 and is therefore proof that prayer and vitamins work. Or some shit like that.

There was a guy named Parker Jensen who was 12 when his family took him from Utah to Idaho to avoid court-ordered chemo, but he just had a small tumor under his tongue. But I don't believe he was affiliated with this group

The leader of this group of yahoos claims to have beaten his own cancer through diet, natural remedies and visits to a sweat lodge. (Yeah, right.) But even he has said the mom needs to come home and not break the law.

This has turned into a bad episode of the Twilight Zone. How can somebody possibly think this is a good idea?

Either a lot of utterly ignorant alt medicine fanatics are commenting on these stories, or this whole thing has turned into an epic troll.
