The "blue" and "green" spirals are the same colour.

Seriously.

The illusion continues even when you scale the image down to 128x128, and is due to the brain interpreting (not by the interpolation algorithm. I checked that.) That's powerful stuff.

Aw man. If you concentrate on the tightest inner spirals, where there's equal quantities of magenta and orange nearby each turquoise pixel, you eventually lose track of which one is "green" and which one is "blue" - they become the same colour - until you look further out and your brain fills in the "right" colour information for the respective spirals.

STOP LYING TO ME, BRAIN, OR I STAB YOU WITH Q-TIP

It's helping!! You don't need to see *real* color, you need to see distinguishment! Your occipital lobe is helping you not worry about things you don't need to concern your pretty little frontal lobe over!

Man I was blown away though. I opened the MacOSX digital color meter to be sure. Yep - R0, G250, B150. Crazy!

Clearly photoshopped. those colors look too different to be the same. I disbelieve.

"Photoshopped"?

Open it up in an image editor and take a look. Or just block off most of it and look at a tiny sliver.

Of course it's only three colors, we're all looking at it on RGB computer screens.

My boyfriend's partly colorblind--he wasn't fooled for a moment. = P I thought he was bullshitting me.

I get him back though. I tell him lies about what Jelly Bellies he's eating. = P

Colourblindness can be advantageous in some situations. Mmmm... evolution...

Yes it can. Like the time my ex-husband got a free pass on staring at a buxom co-worker's bounteous chest all day when our training class learned that he was color-blind and could not tell that there were pink polka dots on her blouse. For the rest of the day anytime someone saw him staring, all he had to say was "I'm trying to see the polka dots." The sad thing is, knowing my ex he was probably telling the absolute truth at least two-thirds of the times he said it..

curious. My level of colourblind would normally auto-interperet turquoise as blue for both spirals, but in this case the colours are solid bright blue and green.

the other spirals are solid red, as always.

I find it's actually easier to break the illusion at a larger size than a smaller size

I opened it in photoshop and use the fill tool to change the green/blue to other colors. It really highlights the illusion. Black shows how it works the best.
