I also sold back my speed panel thing, because near the end it became "stay absolutely still and watch everything die in missile-lightning and money leaps towards you in a shower of gold!"
I had the same problem... I had about 3 upgrade pieces sitting on top of the play button and one that was on top of the speed upgrade. I couldn't sell them and they were all stuck on level 1! After being frustrated for a while I just ignored them and upgraded the rest of my ship.
