Shorter Jimmy Carter to the Southern Baptist Convention: "Go fuck yourselves"

60 years too late (for Carter), 600 years too late (for society), but it's a start.

Powerful statement

"The truth is that male religious leaders have had - and still have - an option to interpret holy teachings either to exalt or subjugate women. They have, for their own selfish ends, overwhelmingly chosen the latter. Their continuing choice provides the foundation or justification for much of the pervasive persecution and abuse of women throughout the world. This is in clear violation not just of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights but also the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul, Moses and the prophets, Muhammad, and founders of other great religions - all of whom have called for proper and equitable treatment of all the children of God. It is time we had the courage to challenge these views."

Which, of course, all the major religions will ignore.

I want to see a sexual discrimination case against the Catholic Church. It won't happen, but I still want to see it.

high five!

Shared on my FB. This is the exact reason why I do not believe in organized religion. It's just an attempt to control people, and as usual I am completely baffled by the inability of the common human being to understand that fact.

And, it's really a few thousand years too late. Most of society's social mores stem from one basic struggle: that over the female reproductive system. When men (and their mothers, lol) get over the need to raise only children they have fathered, and to keep women under lock and key to ensure that this is the case, that is when women will truly be able to achieve equality. Until then, religions and political parties and other groups will continue to make moral judgments about what we choose to do with our bodies.

Yes, but you can't blame Baptists for being controlling assholes before there were Baptists.

As soon as they invented their fucked-up splinter version of Catholicism, yeah, I start blaming 'em.

Yes, but when we're telling off Baptists specifically?

Jimmy Carter wasn't just telling off the Baptists there!

Eggslactly. People crave a fantasy life so they invent these MMLARP's, complete with angels and devils and talking to dead people. Next they need rules to clear up disputes on what's good and what's evil, so the busy-bodies get together and make rules, especially rules that pick on the weaker players and tell them what to do. And because _everyone_ is playing this neat game and getting their kicks out of fooling the kids into thinking it's real, eventually they forget it's fake and take it seriously. Bingo, now it's a religion.

The Southern Baptists were only run-of-the-mill Christians until about twenty years ago when they decided to officially say women were inferior. Carter used his not-inconsiderable sway to essentially fight a rearguard action against the crazy fundies, but couldn't pull it off.

Him doing this is a huge deal. Leaving your church at eighty-five?

Carter's been publicly at odds with the SBC for quite a while now, even mentioning his disagreements in a couple of his books.

I'm glad to see he's made the split final.

Yeah, he said fuck off in 2000, this is reiteration and expansion on that.

The strangest part is that the Southern Baptists haven't thrown him out long ago. I guess it just was too much prestige to have a President around. It's not like there had been much doubt about what he stands for.
