Johnny "Ratman" Carruthers announced today that he hopes to pick up his guitar again soon, and that his recovery has inspired another album in him to rival his blockbuster breakout, "Ciphogene Blues".

-- Steve's baby left him, just to make him cry/and the rent money's gone, but he just won't quit and die... *guitar slide*

I was tempted to post this, for the benefit of [livejournal.com profile] mjschaef, but it's only good for immediate treatment of the injury and not a cure for a 5 year old spinal injury.

"And researchers reported only one adverse effect: The rats turned blue."

Being a different color is an adverse effect?

It is if the rats started out white.

Well, at least that's true in America.

I thought the last paragraph was depressing -

"Nedergaard agrees that more research is necessary, and her group hopes to pursue a phase I clinical trial as soon they can get funding. Unfortunately, because blue food dye is so cheap, they’re not likely to find a drug company to sponsor the trials. “There’s no commercial interest because you can buy it by the pound,”"

So, we have research that could change the lives of millions of injured people around the world, but because it won't make a huge profit, no one wants to sponsor it. How sad (although not surprising)

I was instantly cheered up by looking at the blue rat again though m- how cute!

Look on the bright side: once (well, IF) it passes trials, it will be affordable everywhere, to anyone.

And the trials would be remarkably cheap.

Well, no. The cost of trials has nothing to do with the cost of the compound.

Considering the difference in costs between blue food colouring and cultured stem-cells (which I am fairly certain are used for most traditional approaches), the cost would be somewhat lessened though I do agree that it wouldn't be nearly as extreme as my earlier hyperbole might indicate.
