"It was acting completely out of character for how a lion would normally act around a full-grown man who has a chainsaw in his hand."
I'll gladly recognise Mr Biologist's area of expertise in mountain lions vs full-grown men. I refuse to believe that he's seen, read or heard about enough mountain lion vs full-grown man wielding chainsaw incidents to be confident enough to lay odds.
Would you rather he said "completely out of character for how a mountain lion would act around a full-grown man who is emitting loud mechanical growling noises"? Because that's what he meant. Mountain lions are well known to be leery of full-grown men AND loud mechanical growling noises (eg. the revving of a truck); it's fair to say they would usually avoid both together.
Like nearly all predators, mountain lions usually only attack something they're certain they can safely kill. Of course, if it's starved enough to be at 66% of normal weight for its species, it's probably so crazed with hunger that the usual fear safeguards have shut down in favor of getting some food at any cost.
perdators are cowards. It makes sense. If your survival relies on you fighting and killing on a regular basis you CANNOT keep on picking risky fights. And if you're injured, the risk just goes up next time
