Yep, that happened to me too.

Also, I dropped it and the screen shattered into little bits, which I replaced, but what they *complained* about was "your moisture sensors were triggered, ever".

I especially recommend to look at the picture where the PC in question has been in possession of a smoker.

Those pictures don't tell the half of it. Computer components are statically charged, and they're usually cooled by actively moving air through them. So the computer ends up working exactly like an electrostatic air filter, pulling the dust, smoke, etc out of the air going through it. On several occasions, I've pulled solid pieces of lint out of the gap betwen the CPU heat sink and the fan on top of it.

Dust is bad, but when you combine dust and cigarette smoke you get the most unbelievably disgusting greasy mess imaginable. A friend of mine is a heavy smoker, and after about three years of never cleaning it out the entire inside of his system was covered in a thick grimy layer of the stuff. I can't blame Apple for not forcing their employees to deal with that.

I also do computer maintenance and repairs, and I know what kind of ghastly things you can pull out of a PC, even if people swear they have done nothing bad with them.

CPU fans and heat sinks are my least favorite things to clean, followed by fans in PSUs and graphics cards.

I also make it a point to run an electrostatic air filter close by my servers at home, so I can keep the regular dustings down to every three months instead of the hassle of every month (I live close by a forest, and birch seeds + pollen from fir and pine are regular features in things found from the systems -- although this is an improvement over the last place, where we had fine iron dust and soot instead, from a foundry a mile and half away!).

I'm fully in favor of making the lives of smokers more difficult. I have no problem with Apple's take on this.

I don't necessarily have a problem with it either, so long as they start mentioning this in their Applecare warranty.

Absolutely. If you don't like to smoke, then don't. But don't turn your self-righteous nose up at those who do.

When being near someone who reeks of cigarette smoke sets off my allergy and starts to give me a migraine, I think I'm justified in being upset.

That said, I wouldn't suggest that by virtue of being smokers, they don't get the "benefit" of Apple's contractual obligation.

By that same logic, people should be harrassed if they have a body odor, perfume, cologne, or any other habit or trait that has a side affect gives you a migraine?

I'm not saying you don't have a right to tell that person, "Hey, your smoking bothers me because of my allergies, do you mind not doing it around me, or don't be offended if I can't be around you because of it." But the original commenter was all about 'making life difficult' for those who smoke.

"By that same logic, people should be harrassed if they have a body odor, perfume, cologne, or any other habit or trait that has a side affect gives you a migraine?"

Well, yes, to a degree. "Harrassed" isn't quite the right word, but, "Could you please not apply an entire bottle of Axe before boarding a common carrier?" shouldn't be beyond the pale. And, frankly, a lot of smokers just don't know how powerfully they do smell of smoke... having saturated their nasal passages with the same scent, I guess they can't tell when they've passed the "mild, lingering scent of smoke" stage and gone into "miasma-exuding walking ashtray" territory.

-- Steve's horribly selfish and thinks that someone's right to smoke doesn't trump his right to keep breathing.

PS: I'm not kidding, and I'm not exaggerating; sometimes I can become asthmatic in the presence of second-hand smoke, so it can come down to your fun or my life.

PPS: This doesn't excuse the AppleCult, though; I don't think that particulates from cigarettes are any more hazardous than the other crud they're blasting out, and if they're doing this in sufficient volume to be hazardous they should be wearing masks anyway. IMO, but I did spend a year as a minion of the Fire and Safety rep at an automotive plant many moons ago so it's somewhat (albeit not deeply) informed.

You don't think its justified to have a righteous attitude towards someone who is knowingly killing themself and bothering the piss out of those around them (or at least those who don't smoke)?

You know..if somebody was honestly ignorant of the fact that cigarettes are bad for their health, I could see being justified in letting them know.

But everybody knows this, and if they choose to smoke, then that's their right. Same if they choose to drink alcohol or eat too much, or whatever. Their body, their business..not yours or mine or anybody elses.

The only part where I tend to agree on is smokers who insist on bothering non-smokers about it. But if they're all going out to their designated smoking area, away from folks..or in the privacy of their own homes..fuck anybody who wants to get bent about it.

It is damn unfair that smokers get to have extra breaks to indulge their habit, I'll give you that though.
