I really hate the fact that I don't speak Russian, sometimes. And at the same time, it doesn't happen often enough that I really want to go through the work of learning the language - I'd rather practice my rusty-but-often-serviceable German and get good at THAT rather than start over with Russian.

I mostly want to be able to read Russian for [livejournal.com profile] e_apraksina discussions.

Are you just hoping they'll be interesting, or do you have some idea of what they're about?

It's the one place where there are regular conversations I don't understand. And sometimes I'm sure they're talking about the source of an image I'd like to know more about.

Google is usually good enough for getting the gist of things.

It's a shame that the Germans never managed to produce a watchable sitcom or somesuch.
We Austrians managed, but you'd have about zero chance at understanding our dialect :/

OTOH, the Germans managed to produce a watchable sf series.

Some say two. (I've not seen it myself, but I had some friends that used to find it terribly amusing).

Since it uses English, I can't really think of it as a German series.

I very much liked Lexx (the original couple episodes, featuring Eva Habermann, not the later series!) when it first aired. But I don't think of it as German, it feels .. Canadian.

I tried to watch that, 2 or 3 times, but the pain was too great.

associating the symbols with sound as you scan the text makes pattern recognition easier. it can be a pretty passive way to start building vocabulary.

Is the phrase "I really hate the fact that I don't speak $LANG, sometimes" not true for other values, then?

I'm being taught by a pretty blonde girl at work. It's pretty great.
