According to the suit, this one (http://patft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html&r=13&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PTXT&s1=5787449&OS=5787449&RS=5787449), it seems. Apparently, it has to do with the use of custom XML in documents (such as, in this case, Word docs).

Bleg. Just looking over it, it looks veeery generic. Sigh.

I won't get into my feelings about patents here.

Probably for the best, as I haven't actually taken patent law yet. (3L fall, I'm thinking. But I may be able to talk more about this before then, seeing as I'm working for an IP boutique...)

Sadly, they can alter Word and still sell it.

It would be a much better world if we would all go back to WordPerfect.

WordPerfect past 1994-ish was unusably bad.

MS Word right now isn't just leaping off the shelves under the premise of "I'm awesome and easy to use!" Shit, I swear that Microsoft changes things in each version just to make things more difficult for their users.

Oh, pfft.

WordPerfect has been basically the same program since 1985. It's still the same robust workhorse.

I'm sure the name of the plaintiff has nothing to do with this, of course, but allow me to introduce a small alteration.

Hrm.

I don't see what you did there. But I'm not clever yet this morning. No coffee.

Say it out loud.

(That's ok. It was posted before I was awake, too, and is probably amusing only to me.)

Actually.. that's pretty funny now that I've metabolized sufficient quantities of coffee.
