I'm a tad confused about how he can continue to live if Roger doesn't eat or drink. My uncle died of cancer, and towards the end it was incredibly painful watching him trying to slip down a piece of yoghurt.

He's got a tube. Nothing goes through his mouth, it's all poured in directly to his stomach.

Holy sonofabitch. I did not know that. I actually thought he had died, i guess. But that is both terrible and glorious at the same time. He seems to have a really good point of view, at least.

Ebert has ben very sick for quite a while now but his writing has just gotten better, I think. He's very introspective these days.

Just thought I'd post a comment and thank you for continually pointing me at Things I Really Wanted To Read But Didn't Know Existed.

Roger Ebert is brilliant; I hope that if I am ever in similar circumstances I face it with that kind of poise.

I don't know Ebert as much, but that second piece was very sad. Partly because I've thought of that, while I'm washing the top few plates and putting them back on top.

His back-and-forth with his commenters is wonderful - use your browser's search for 'Ebert' and you'll find his responses to comments.

Apparently this is a result of thyroid cancer.
