"We do not believe [Spirit] is extractable."

Spirit is expected to hibernate for most of the next 6 months, in the hopes of gaining enough power to return to life once Martian Spring arrives and the sun returns.

You know what I just found? I just found a note on [livejournal.com profile] spiritrover that says: "so my primary mission has ended, but they've extended it for another 3 months (http://spiritrover.livejournal.com/14227.html?style=mine). which is nice, because i don't think i'll be able to read livejournal if they turn off my connection."

See the date on that? April, *2004*.

Spirit's gone for *6 years* past planned mission parameters, and they expect it will turn itself on again in the spring to do more Science!(tm).

I know. I am not disappointed---how could anyone be?---just sad. That is the Little Rover That Could.

XKCD agrees. (And makes me a little sniffly.)

Maybe it'll get some traction when Spring brings the new growth of grass!
