I note that while it was initially banned for 'promoting gang behaviour' when the media get interested, suddenly they talk about violence and escapism, and the punishment side of things (though if they're allowed books, to watch TV, and so forth, that part seems questionable)
Yeah, while the reason for the ban was stupid, I can't really say as I'm against taking away recreational activities for someone who bludgeoned his sister's boyfriend to death with a sledgehammer. It's not like we're talking about summer camp here.
Recreational activities do help keep prisons safer for both inmates and guards; there's nothing more dangerous than a room full of convicts with time on their hands and nothing to divert them. Not saying that all recreational activities are appropriate/desirable, but they do serve a real role in keeping CO's and inmates alike safer.
Not to mention the purpose of prison. Is prison solely to punish convicts, or is it to rehabilitate them? Most of them are getting out eventually, to then hopefully reintegrate into society; which approach, punishment or rehabilitation, is going to aid reintegration the most?
I agree in the general, but less so in the specific. I don't know what else is or isn't allowed to be done, recreationally, but for D&D to be not allowed compared to reading books, TV, whatever, does seem a little unfair.
There couldn't be a threat to security, because when the rogue would try to sneak up on the guards, there would be a long, loud pause while the group argued about the best way to do it.
Not only that, but 2/3 of them wouldn't know how the Stealth rules worked *and* would never consider letting that stop them from having an opinion about it.
